The Commission for A New Georgia

Executive Summary
Final Report

Administrative Services Task Force

The Task Force is examining the current landscape and strategic future of Georgia’s freight and logistics industry and the transportation infrastructure that supports it.

The task force is focused on these objectives:

To capitalize on Georgia’s position as the Gateway to the East Coast for global imports and exports, and to understand needs of the freight and logistics industries.

To acquire a working knowledge of how economic opportunities are linked by freight movement to/through Georgia’s transportation infrastructure.

To collect and analyze on-the-ground data about current and future freight movement, activity hubs, and logistics centers.

RECENT ACTIVITY:

More than 130 business and industry leaders and public officials attended the recent series of Listening Sessions held in five cities statewide. Discussions centered on needs of Freight and Logistics industries and solutions for improving freight movement through Georgia's transportation system. Input will be used to assess the current infrastructure and future investments.

BACKGROUND

Freight and logistics – the way products and materials are moved from point to point in the supply chain – is a critical economic driver throughout the state and in every county. Here are the vital statistics on the impact:

One of every 10 jobs in Georgia
America ’s 4th largest and fastest growing seaport
4,700 miles of rail and 20,000 miles of state and federal highways
118 million square feet of warehouse space
1 of 3 airports to rank top 10 for both air freight and passengers
$300+ billion annual economic impact

Logistics is “an industry of industries,” comprising many firms that operate both independently and interdependently, relying on a common infrastructure which functions as a “logistics ecosystem”.

GOALS

The Task Force Study has three goals:

Provide a starting point for assessing current freight infrastructure capacity and future investment requirements.

Target transportation infrastructure investments for maximum return on investment.

Support and grow the strategic industries of freight and logistics.
